In light of the independent report by former Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Elizabeth Broderick, WORK180 has suspended Rio Tinto’s status as an Endorsed Employer for All Women.
Rio Tinto became an Endorsed Employer for Women in October 2019 by meeting WORK180’s minimum standards for endorsement.
In addition to the amount of paid parental leave organizations offer to primary carers and the offering of multiple forms of flexible working arrangements, WORK180’s endorsement requires employers to demonstrate a genuine commitment to building an inclusive and equitable workplace and a clear alignment with WORK180’s mission and values.
The report was commissioned by Rio and has been published in full.
Commenting on the matter, WORK180’s co-founder and co-CEO, Gemma Lloyd has said:
“We are alarmed by the findings of this review, however we hope that Rio Tinto’s transparent approach in publishing the report indicates a genuine commitment to making serious, structural change within the organization. If it does, Rio Tinto could emerge from this a stronger, more progressive organisation.”
About WORK180
WORK180 is global platform with a mission to raise organizational standards so that all women* can choose workplaces where they can thrive.
We support and endorse employers who are striving to do better – build a diverse workforce, have more inclusive policies, hold themselves accountable to progressive change. And we connect these employers with a global community of women from all backgrounds who care about gender equity and want to feel informed, understood, respected, and empowered in their career choices.
Our employer directory and jobs board transparently displays information about employer benefits and policies related to flexible working arrangements, paid parental leave, pay equity and a range of other criteria, ensuring women can be fully informed about the organizations they are considering.
We don’t expect employers to be perfect; it’s about ensuring every company we support is genuinely committed to gender equity and creating an inclusive workplace. In 2021, only 50% of employers who applied for endorsement met our minimum standards. We regularly review both our standards and endorsements to ensure they genuinely reflect our mission.
