About the Role

The BHP Iron Ore Rail Operations team are thinking big for the future of Heavy Haul Train Driving in WA.

We have developed an initiative that will change the way we recruit and train locomotive drivers into the future of Rail and BHP, enabling our experienced professional team to pass on their pride, passion and performance to a new cohort of train drivers.

The Rail Operations Trainee Program is your opportunity to follow an intensive course to learn our safety systems, how we operate, and the skills required to become a qualified shunter. The course then progresses onto a driver training program that will see you pass-out as a qualified heavy haul train driver on completion.

Trainees will utilise new technology, virtual reality, and hands on scenarios to accelerate their learning in a program more ambitious than anything we have done previously in Rail. This trainee pipeline enables candidates new to the industry to develop a career that will support their development and families for decades.

You will work alongside a supportive team, interface with Shunters, Drivers and Trainers in a new training centre on site in Port Hedland. With periods in our Perth office to be trained on other facets of our business.

Reporting to one of our Training Supervisors, the role will be challenging, the course will require focus and confidence.

Once qualified you will be responsible for some of the longest, heaviest trains in the world, across a network spanning 1,330km of track. You will work 12 hours shifts starting around the clock and there will be long periods where you will work alone. The role is based in the heat of the Pilbara and includes emergency response, breakdown rectification and compliance to strict regulatory safety processes. But you will be supported every step of the way, as you learn the industry and tasks required to become a professional driver.

We are looking for adaptable, positive, individuals who are open to exploring the world of rail whilst learning something new every day. As a BHP Trainee Train Driver, you will learn to operate within Safe Work practices to ensure the reliable delivery of Iron ore from Mine sites to the Port Hedland Port Terminal. It is critical that you perform all duties in accordance with Network Rules, Regulations and Safe Operating Procedures.
