Our Undergraduate Vacation Studentships are run over the Australian summer holidays and offer high achieving and promising undergraduate students the opportunity to collaborate with CSIRO researchers in our world class facilities.

As the successful candidate, you will have the chance to work on a real project in either science, technology, or a related field such as science communication.

Participation in the Vacation Studentship Program has influenced countless students in their choice of further study and future career options. Many have gone on to pursue a PhD and/or built successful research career; either within CSIRO, universities, or industry.

Strategy Team
The Strategy team drive the formation of CSIRO's strategic direction, support portfolio investment decision making and tracking delivery. This is done through facilitating conversations, providing informed insights, and supporting performance management. The Strategy team supports CSIRO in developing its Corporate Plan and Annual Report, strategy development and impact planning for individual Business Units, facilitating the Annual Performance and Investment Review process, and continuous performance reporting.

The Strategy Team is offering the following project within their Portfolio program:

Project Title

AI/ML and Corporate Strategy - What are the strengths and limitations?

Project Description

This project will explore how AI/ML can be used to support portfolio strategy. This may include a range of applications from cluster analysis and project mapping to trends and insights analysis to inform strategy development. We will develop and test an AI/ML model using our past work and explore the strengths and limitations of that approach.

Location: Clayton, VIC; Dutton Park, Qld or Eveleigh, NSW
Stipend: $1,915.90 per fortnight
Duration: Placements are for 8 to 12 weeks between November 2024 and February 2025.

To be considered you will need:

  • To be enrolled in an undergraduate degree at an Australian university;
  • Have completed at least 2 years (full-time equivalent) of an undergraduate course (at the time the studentship is expected to commence). This includes third or fourth-year students, including final year honours students;
  • A strong academic record (credit average or higher).
  • An interest in pursuing a research career in science or technology, or a career in a related discipline; and
  • The ability to undertake a full-time placement for 8-12 weeks over the university summer vacation period

Eligibility

Applications for these studentships are open to Australian and New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and International students who currently resides in Australia and have full work rights for the duration of the placement (do not require visa sponsorship).

Appointment to this role may be subject to conditions including provision of a national police check as well as other security/medical/character clearance requirements.

    • the reasons why the research project/s you have selected are of interest to you and how your skills/knowledge meet the project requirements; and
    • an outline of your longer-term career aspirations and how this program will help you achieve them.
  2. upload your academic results in the ‘Cover Letter’ field;
  3. in the ‘Education’ section select your university from the Educational Institute list;
  4. in the ‘Job-Specific Information’ section select ‘Not Applicable’ for both Preference 1 and Preference 2; and enter your Grade Point Average (GPA) as per the University Admission Centre’s methodology. If you have a WAM, please read the Methodology on this site and calculate a GPA using the formula provided.
