About the role

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Engineer to support innovative projects that will accelerate the energy transition. This is part of Essential Energy transformative Future Networks Program that will set the foundations for smarter homes and a smarter network. Our projects will allow more renewable generation, smarter demand management and optimisation of Customer Energy Resources (such as batteries and EVs). The outcomes will have direct benefits to customers and reduce emssions. This role will have a signficaint role in making these projects a success. The Senior Engineer will be responsible for strategic technical evaluations and implementation of agreed plans across a range of technical functions, including development of new criteria and applications of knowledge and procedures across the Energy Network.

The role will also require project management responsibility for the evaluation, design programs of work, and validation of equipment and systems and managing the development of broad plans, budgets, and strategies within the distribution network.

It is a unique opportunity to become a domain export for the organisation and contribute to its strategic goals through delivery of outcomes and guidance to other teams.

This role will preferably be based within the Essential Energy network area with the ability to work from home in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support the implementation of demand management strategies for CER such as EV, hot waters systems, batteries and so on.
  • Take a leading role in deploying minimum demand solutions such as the back stop capability and dynamic load control program
  • Engage and onboard external stakeholders such as Original Equipment Manufacturers to onboard them into our dynamic connections framework using the CSIP-AUS communications protocol
  • Support the development of a DERMS/CERMS solution and provide feedback from real time operations on the effectiveness of Dynamic Operating Envelopes.
  • Research, Identify, establish and foster key business, regulatory body, stakeholder and customer relationships ensuring Energy Network projects and process issues are addressed to meet agreed outcomes
  • Engage and collaborate with internal stakeholders to promote and further develop demand management programs.
  • Contribute to forming a long term vision for Essential Energy on how to leverage CER to accerlate the energy transition

About You

In order to be successful in this position, you will possess:

  • Extensive experience in a similar engineering role in the Energy/Electrical and/or Utilities Industry
  • Knowledge of customer energy resource and their role in the energy transition
  • Knowledge of power systems (LV/MV/HV systems) / microgrids / BESS / substations etc.
  • Knowledge and experience working with CER/DER/DERMs.
  • Knowledge of relevant Australian standards concerning electrical systems.
  • Good understanding of communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet IP etc
  • Good understanding / Knowledge of Networking systems i.e. switches/gateways
  • Knowledge and application of current network design philosophies, procedures, statutory requirements and Essential Energy Electrical Safety Rules
  • Demonstrated problem solving and decision-making skills with the ability to manage diverse and complex issues
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver technical services in a professional and timely manner
  • Understanding of Power System load flows, voltage regulation and Power system modelling
  • Understanding of thermal, frequency, voltage limitations in and of the Power Systems and its components and assets, such as lines, cables, transformers

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Engineering to satisfy Professional Membership criterion of Engineers Australia or other Professional Body as aligned to the Washington Accord

Desirable

  • Experience working on the deployment and optimisation of consumer energy resources/virtual power plants
  • Experience working with IOT communication protocols similar to CSIP-AUS
  • Experience with demand management programs
  • Experience working with Dynamic Operating Envelopes
  • Knowledge / Experience with SCADA systems related to ADMS.
