Pacific National (PN) is the largest provider of diversified rail freight services in Australia. We haul a variety of freight including coal, intermodal containers, steel, and a range of bulk commodities and materials that keep the region’s economy, businesses and households running. We operate nationally with approximately 3,500 staff in over 90+ sites across Australia.

An opportunity has presented itself for an experienced Supervisor to join our team at our Bowen Terminal.

About the role

Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Supervisor plays a key role in providing support and leadership to train crew, as well as leading and coordinating the day-to-day operations. This role will have a strong emphasis on safety leadership, people, implementing business improvements, leading diverse teams in a shift work environment and ensuring productive workplace practices.

In addition, the Supervisor is responsible for ensuring Pacific National trains run on time, safely and efficiently through consultation with stakeholders. This role presents a real opportunity to thrive in a dynamic and fast paced operational environment where no two days are the same. The ability to adapt to change and apply critical thinking are essential to succeed in this rewarding leadership role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Inspire and lead a safety-focused team by supporting, supervising, coordinating and managing operational resources
  • Ensure compliance with the relevant network access regulations and policy standards
  • Develop organisational capability by building and maintaining the knowledge, skills and attributes required of the team with a focus on coaching, mentoring, and safety leadership
  • Coordinate the implementation and communication of organisational, divisional and local safety instructions, as well as assess team members via driver performance and safety observations
  • Have a commitment to providing optimal customer service, building excellent relationships with all stakeholders and identifying and developing improved business solutions for our customers
  • Ability to enhance the strong team culture within the Bowen depot

Candidates must be available to work rotating shifts.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have a strong leadership and safety background.

An experienced operational leader who is passionate about driving positive change and is not afraid to challenge the status quo. Prior rail experience is not essential, however previous leadership in logistics or heavy industry preferable.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • Value Safety above all else and a key focus on maintaining and driving a strong safety culture.
  • Experience in leading, coaching, and motivating a multi-faceted team in a busy environment.
  • Proven passion for developing your teams and seeing people's goals being achieved.
  • Ability to maintain and develop high performance teams
  • Proven strengths in problem solving and analytical ability
  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to communicate at all levels
  • Qualifications in Transport, Logistics or Business Management will be highly regarded but are not essential
