We are looking to hire an exceptional Solution Safety Lead to join our team, share our vision and help us in our engineering transformation journey. The Solution Safety and HSE-P Lead is responsible for supporting the engineering operations of the VTS Technical and Engineering Competence Centre (VTS-ECC) with a focus on safety assurance, engineering/quality/safety management systems, processes effectiveness/continuous improvement, and product regulatory and environmental compliance (HSE-P).

The role spans responsibility across the domain in the four businesses of Protected Mobility Vehicles (PRV), Australian Munitions (AM), Integrated Weapon Systems (IWS) and Explosive Ordinance Services (EOS), and is responsible for driving process, policy and reporting alignment across the segments in support of engineering transformation of the VTS Engineering Competence Centre.

Supporting initiatives and commitments in the HSE-P domain, the position is responsible for championing and improving environmental performances on the full life cycle of the products/projects through eco-design deployment in line with Thales HSE strategy, policies and objectives.

The responsibilities are split across Safety Engineering (70%), HSE-Product (20%) and Engineering Operations (10%). To be successful within the first year of this role, you will tailor a specific Safety Management System for VTS and flow it down to the four VTS businesses while driving the Engineering transformation for the Safety Engineering field.

About the role:

As a System Safety specialist, you will:

  • Re-invigorating the PRV-VTS solution safety management system in authoring and updating any System Safety plan needed by the domain’s four businesses.

  • Lead the implementation of the system safety management system by monitoring, identifying and/or implementing changes and improvements required to ensure ongoing best practice and compliance with safety legislation, industry regulation and corporate policies.

  • Support a range of activities that identify and address safety hazards and risks. These include but are not limited to ensuring compliance to safety policies by developing safety plans, processes, procedures such as System Safety Program Plans (SSPPs), Hazard Logs (HLs) and/or Risk Assessments (RAs) and Safety Case Report (SCRs).

  • Provide timely safety subject matter expertise, including participating and/or chairing System Safety Working Groups, Safety Review Boards and other Safety Committees and Workshops as appropriate. Provide clear reporting and recommendations.

  • Provide expertise, recommendation and escalation to the Safety Assurance pillar (Safety Authority).

As an HSE-Product specialist, you will

  • Assess HSE-Product risks/opportunities in bids and be responsible for the HSE-P memo for Gate reviews including tracking the execution of eco-design (substances traceability, life cycle analysis and recyclability).

  • Drive the topic of environment throughout the product life cycle from the bid phase to support and end-of-life, driving and tracking HSE strategy in product policies throughout the business segments

  • Analyse data, identify and evaluate risks, facilitate solutions to address issues. Provide guidance to the business leadership to enable decision making.

  • Identify and escalate non-conformances and areas of operational and compliance risks.

For the Engineering Operation part of the role, you will:

  • Support the effort in collecting and reporting KPI’s and other organisation metrics.

How About You?

  • Minimum 15 years’ or more experience in a similar or adjacent role.

  • Strong background and significant experience in Safety Engineering roles, authoring Safety Management plans and Safety technical notes.

  • Proficient in broad range of technical areas specifically in highly regulated sectors.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Technical aptitude (strong problem solving/analytical skills) and ability to comprehend and appreciate product engineering and requirements and constraints across a range of mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering domains to identify and resolve technical challenges, reporting and make informed decisions.

  • Leadership, communication, high level of resilience and influencing skills: ability to champion and drive change.
