The mine is located on the Norseman-Wiluna Greenstone Belt, which forms part of the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia. It is a highly mineralised granite-greenstone terrain with world-class deposits of gold and nickel. St Ives has produced more than 10.5 million ounces of gold, with the first major gold mining expedition commencing in the mid-1980s.

St Ives Gold Mine operates mainly on a residential basis, with employees either living in Kambalda or Kalgoorlie as well as having a fly-in and fly-out option for those not living locally.

With a 10-year life of mine, stability is also on offer.

Role Details:

Gold Fields Australia is currently seeking a Senior Engineer: Geotechnical to join the team at the St Ives Gold Mine. Reporting to the Superintendent: Geotechnical, you will be responsible for the effective coordination of all mining-related geotechnical issues within the St Ives Underground and Open Pits to achieve budgeted production, and meet all quality standards including cost, safety and environmental.

This role is offered on 8 days on 6 days off roster and can be offered either Fly in Fly fly-out from Perth or residential (Kambalda or Kalgoorlie or surrounds).

About the role:

  • Assist in leading a team through a significant operational ramp-up period and change in mining method.

  • Manage geotechnical functions across open pit and underground assets.

  • Communication of the geotechnical aspects to the workforce, technical team, and management.

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of excavation design, planning, geological and operational issues to identify and communicate potential opportunities and concerns.

  • Contribute and partake in medium-term projects as required by the mine to ensure mine-wide stability.

  • Be involved in geotechnical review at various stages of project development (Concept through to Feasibility).

  • Ability to cover the daily production tasks relating to geotechnical engineering including development plans, blasting plans, documentation of inspections and data collection, geotechnical monitoring and analysis, recommendations and QAQC when required.

  • Contribute to mine plans and designs to ensure maximum ore recovery with continued compliance with ground management plans.

  • Update and maintain the Ground Control Management Plant, Seismic Hazard Management Plan and Paste Fill Management Plant.

About you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering, Geological Engineering, or Geology with Post Graduate qualifications in Geomechanics, Masters in Geotechnical Engineering (Desirable)

  • Extensive proven experience in geotechnical engineering

  • Demonstrated extensive experience in underground hard rock mining.

  • Frontline Management Training, including leadership experience would be desirable.
