About the role

WesTrac is seeking an experienced Product Engineering Specialist – Failure Analysis to join our team here in Tomago. As a Failure Analysis Specialist within the WesTrac Product Engineering Team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability and performance of Caterpillar products. You will be responsible for investigating and analysing failures in machinery components and systems, providing valuable insights to enhance product design, maintenance practices, and customer satisfaction.

The successful applicant will be responsible for liaison between the Product and Cat Engineering Group to ensure swift problem-solving and continuous improvement of Caterpillar equipment.

This position is a full-time permanent role, working Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. The hours are 08:30am – 5:00pm.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed analysis of failed components and systems to identify root causes of failures.
• Collaborate closely with technical communicators and engineers to gather relevant data and insights.
• Utilise advanced analytical tools and methodologies to interpret failure patterns and trends.
• Prepare comprehensive failure analysis reports, including findings, recommendations, and corrective actions.
• Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including service technicians, engineers, and management, to disseminate analysis results and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
• Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in failure analysis to enhance expertise and contribute to team knowledge.

Skills & Experience

• Tertiary qualification in Mechanical Engineering or trade certificate in the related field.
• Up to 10 years of post-qualification experience in failure analysis, ideally within the heavy equipment or automotive industry.
• Proven experience in failure analysis.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex data sets and draw meaningful conclusions.
• Proficiency in using analytical tools, root cause analysis, and statistical analysis.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
• Highly analytical with the ability to analyse and report on data efficiently.
• Ability to build and maintain relationships throughout the business.
• Meticulous approach with a commitment to accuracy and thoroughness in analysis and reporting.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently manage multiple projects simultaneously.
