Who we are

Transgrid is at the forefront of Australia’s transition to a clean energy future. We are the backbone of the National Electricity Market, and we are pursuing a nation-changing portfolio of infrastructure projects that will accelerate the decarbonisation of our economy.

At Transgrid, our work improves the lives of millions – from lighting up sports fields, schools and homes, to powering the wheels of commerce and everything else in between. Now it’s your turn to make it happen.

Transgrid offers fulfilling careers for driven people who can help ensure that our business and the essential services we provide to consumers, the community and key stakeholders are continually improving. With us you will thrive in a collaborative environment where new ideas and knowledge sharing are encouraged, and where you’ll be supported through opportunities to develop and achieve your full potential.

Electricity transmission will be central to the energy transformation needed to achieve economy-wide decarbonisation. Transgrid is helping create a clean energy future by supporting and ensuring a smooth transition to renewables. Timely investment in new infrastructure will be essential for the power system’s successful transformation to the energy system of the future.

Planning and development of the network is undertaken on a cyclical and needs basis to ensure that transmission service delivery to customers is cost-effective, environmentally responsible, responsive to changing requirements and meets the jurisdictional, contractual and National Electricity Rule (NER) obligations.

The Opportunity

Are you an expert in Power System Analysis and passionate about contributing to the transformation of Australia’s electricity system?

The Senior Engineer in Major Projects Planning will take a leading role in the modelling, analysis, and provision of recommendations for high voltage transmission system developments and the energy system more broadly, to help guide the long term planning of NSW’s transmission system and major interconnectors and identified Renewable Energy Zones.

This role is perfect if you love combining a sound knowledge of the electricity, renewable energy, new technologies and transmission planning with economics and strategy. You will perform power system analysis and electricity market modelling in planning major transmission projects including interconnectors by supporting project origination, development and strategic decision making.

Within Major Projects Planning, you will contribute to thought-leading analysis and modelling to identify the optimal development of Transgrid’s transmission system and interconnections in the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) under a range of future scenarios. You will identify and assess the most robust and lowest cost way to support the decarbonisation of our economy. Your modelling and analysis will help articulate the value of transmission and the role of transmission to provide insurance against the early closure of coal generators.

The Major Projects Planning team guides the long term planning of the NSW transmission system and interconnections in the NEM, and looks to influence the long term planning of the energy system as a whole.

Do you have market modelling experience? Do you know about Regulatory Investment Tests for Transmission (RIT-T)? Do you know a thing or two about new technologies, like batteries and grid forming inverters to support inertia and system strength? Even better!

Working across the Network Planning and Operations business unit, you will perform power system analysis for planning transmission projects including interconnectors, author and review robust technical reports, support thought leadership publications and streamline energy systems analysis processes. You will develop high level plans for longer term network developments, work closely with others within the business to assess the feasibility of new technologies to support the energy transition and collaborate with economists to prove the value of new transmission developments.

In the role of the Senior Engineer in Major Projects Planning you will:

  • Undertake power system analysis to identify network and non-network solutions for transmission system issues
  • Develop and document technical analysis methodologies and model development (primarily in PSSE and/or PowerFactory)
  • Apply modelling and data driven approach to assessing the optimal long term development of Transgrid’s transmission system, interconnectors and the energy system more broadly
  • Analyse the implications of future scenarios, policies or events, such as the unexpected coal closures on the energy system, to ensure we are planning a robust energy system
  • Keep abreast of changes in technologies, the National Electricity Market and relevant legislation to assess its impact on operations of the NSW high voltage network and Transgrid’s business
  • Facilitate the on-the-job training of other team members in power system analysis (primarily using PSSE and market modelling software such as PLEXOS)
  • Provide inputs to prepare timely and accurate briefings for management
  • Review Major Projects Planning processes, policies and guidelines to achieve improved team performance
  • Participate in discussions with stakeholders to build long lasting relationships with industry groups including AEMO and other TNSPs, and exemplify collaborative behaviours to ensure stakeholder requirements are included
  • Author or review concise and clear reports including reference documentation and provides presentations to stakeholders.

Skills & Experience

What we expect from you:

  • Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline, with Electrical Engineering degree being the most relevant
  • Extensive power system analysis experience using PSSE
  • Experience in market modelling and application of Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T) will be an advantage
  • Extensive knowledge of national and international planning standards and practices
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical networks engineering, and operations
  • Excellent knowledge of the energy industry, the National Electricity Market and new technologies
  • Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills
  • Communicate effectively with a range of persons including customers, suppliers, contractors, other technical experts and senior management (written and verbal).

Recognition & Reward

What you can expect from us:

  • Structured leadership and development programs
  • Hybrid and flexible working arrangements available
  • 14 weeks Parental Leave (includes adoption)
  • 2 weeks Other Parent Leave
  • 6 weeks Share the Care Leave
  • Annual picnic day (additional day off)
  • Salary sacrifice options for superannuation and motor vehicles (subject to ATO requirements)
  • Moving leave
  • Emergency/disaster leave

In return for your hard work we have numerous benefits and initiatives to support you personally and professionally including but not limited to private health insurance discount, motor vehicle lease plan, career development support, study assistance program and workplace flexibility.

Join us and make it happen for your career, and for the millions of Australians who rely on our services every day.
