Company Description

About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

Job Description

As a Product Analytics professional, your primary responsibility will be to transform both 1st-party and 3rd-party data into valuable insights that will help Shopify’s finance and product leadership make great decisions. In this role, you will play a crucial part in shaping the future of our company by leveraging data to make informed decisions, manage risk, detect errors, and eliminate toil. You’ll help build the backbone of how Shopify measures itself and our merchants, and help the rest of the company understand what those measurements mean.

You will thrive in an environment that fosters entrepreneurship and personal growth. Here at Shopify, we believe in the power of our product to create new value for the world and provide unlimited opportunities for personal development. We are a team that gets things done quickly and continuously learns from our experiences. Operating with minimal processes and high trust, we prioritize making an impact over following a prescriptive corporate structure.

To excel in this role, you must have a deep passion for your work and a commitment to constantly improving your craft. Shopify is not for everyone - if you prefer a traditional corporate environment or an in-person office setting, this may not be the right fit. However, if you thrive on change, can solve complex problems, and are seeking a hypergrowth environment, you have found your place.

At Shopify, we value independent thinkers who are dedicated to their growth. While caring deeply about our mission, we also understand the importance of seeing the bigger picture and serving those with differing opinions. You will be challenged to constantly learn and embrace discomfort as you work alongside driven professionals who strive for mastery.

Joining our team means embracing an unrelenting pace and navigating ambiguity with resilience. We are building products for the long-term, aiming to establish Shopify as a 100-year company. As such, you must thrive on change and chaos rather than merely enduring them. Growth is not just an opportunity here; it is an expectation. With the necessary resources to push yourself beyond your comfort zone, you will have the chance to truly thrive in this dynamic environment.

If you are ready to contribute to a company that prioritizes impact, growth, and innovation, then we invite you to join our team of passionate professionals who are dedicated to making commerce better for everyone.

In this role you will:

  • Identify and solve complex problems across various finance, business, and data domains through data modeling, analysis, forecasting, and insights.
  • Take ownership of major or ambiguous problems at Shopify and develop innovative solutions that set industry standards.
  • Drive strategy, decision-making, and execution in high-impact areas, effectively communicating with senior leaders to ensure alignment.
  • Establish and improve technical patterns that shape the Data Insights function at Shopify, driving operational excellence and raising the quality bar.
  • Provide thought leadership and guidance to the wider Shopify data community, going beyond individual mentorship to influence the discipline as a whole.
  • Set technical aims and establish patterns that have a significant impact on a specific area or group, contributing to the evolution of the Data Insights subdiscipline.
  • Exemplify expertise in both technical competency and behavior within the Data Insights discipline, showcasing a deep understanding of the craft.
  • Expand influence beyond the subdiscipline, being sought out by product and business leaders for solving complex problems with data-driven solutions.
  • Serve as a technical leader in the industry context, setting high standards for the craft of the subdiscipline.
  • Coach business and finance partners on strategy and best practices, extending expertise beyond the subdiscipline.
  • Make a substantial impact on the organization and play a key role in cross-functional roadmaps.

Qualifications

  • Extensive commercial experience in a data science role solving high impact business problems
  • Experience building and managing high performance data science teams
  • Experience delivering business impact through analysis and data products
  • Experience building data pipelines and driving ETL design decisions
  • Experience with statistical methods like regression, GLMs or experiment design and analysis, shipping productionized machine learning systems or other advanced techniques are also welcome
  • Technical leadership and management experience (you enjoy doing both). You can jump into the code to the level that your direct reports admire and respect, but are also interested in developing people and capacity for your team
  • Experience creating data product strategies, shipping data products, iterating after launch, and trying again
  • Extensive experience using Python including a strong grasp of object oriented programming (OOP) fundamentals
  • Strong ability to prioritize and communicate to technical and non-technical audiences alike

It would be great if you have:

  • Experience with financial reporting, accounting, or other formal financial processes
  • Previous experience using Spark (either via Scala or PySpark)
  • Experience with data storytelling using Tableau, QlikView, Mode, Matplotlib, D3, or similar data visualization tools
