It started with a triathlon.
As employees crossed the finish line, many for the first time, the air was electric with pride. Some cried. Others hugged their teammates. For many, it was more than a race — it was the start of a life-changing journey toward connection, confidence, and community.
The spark behind the movement
When Alex Robeson, Manager of Explosives Mobilisation at AngloGold Ashanti Australia, began his own fitness journey, he quickly saw the ripple effect of exercise in the workplace.
“Across sites and in the corporate office, people were quietly training for incredible feats,” he explained. “You could feel the energy they brought — supportive, uplifting, contagious. We needed a way to harness that, and share it.”
That vision sparked the launch of the AngloGold Ashanti Australia Sports and Fitness Employee Resource Group. Created in January 2024, it was designed to support people at every stage of their fitness journey and to foster belonging through movement and mutual encouragement.
Wellbeing in action
Now more than 240 members strong, the Sports and Fitness Employee Resource Group operates in two powerful ways. It connects like-minded colleagues through a collaborative forum, and it sponsors employees and their families to enter endorsed fitness events. Participants receive access to AngloGold Ashanti-branded sports kits, training support, and community celebration.
Whether you’re signing up for your first triathlon or joining a lunchtime walking group, the focus is the same: get moving, together.

From soft launch to standout success
GIS and Database Specialist Justine Wilson, a member of the group’s leadership team, says the initiative’s real power lies in its community:
“It’s about bringing people together and supporting one another.”
From a soft launch at mine sites and corporate offices to the group’s bold showing at the 2024 Busselton Festival of Triathlon, the momentum has only grown. Employees who had never considered themselves athletes proudly completed the event. One year later, many were back for more, competing again in 2025, stronger and more confident.
The initiative has sparked participation across the board. More than 150 runners have taken part in the HBF Run for a Reason in the last two years. From swimmers and paddlers to first-time joggers, employees found support, courage, and camaraderie.
Why this approach works
Many companies sponsor events. AngloGold Ashanti Australia goes a step further — building a space where employees can connect, commit, and achieve things they once thought were out of reach.
“When people from other companies see what we’re doing, they ask, ‘Can you get me a job there?’” shared one team member.
The initiative is more than a perk. It’s a reason to stay. It’s creating bonds across job sites and disciplines, helping colleagues see each other and themselves in a new light.
