Introduction to Role:

Join the Animal Sciences & Technologies (AST) Department at AstraZeneca in Cambridge, where we support and drive in vivo science. Our teams of scientists conduct studies to evaluate the efficacy & safety of candidate drugs and deliver expert advice to the BioPharmaceuticals and Oncology R&D Units. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic veterinarian to lead the welfare and compliance function, supporting AstraZeneca’s in vivo work in the UK. Accountabilities:

As the Director of Animal Welfare and Compliance, you will be responsible for routine care and preventive medicine of animals housed in AZ’s UK facility. You will lead technical capability development, set standards for animal welfare, husbandry, accommodation, surgery, anaesthesia, analgesia and other complex technical in vivo skills. You will also advise AstraZeneca scientists on the development and refinement of animal models required for the delivery and strategic development of in vivo pipelines. Your role will also involve leading continuous learning and incident management processes, overseeing 1st line compliance to ASPA regulation requirements, and leading the development AZ UK animal care and use programme.

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Veterinary degree – DVM or equivalent.
  • Strong experience in laboratory animal medicine (10+ years) and proven track record of refining animal models – safety and efficacy.
  • Experienced with common in vivo models for oncology, respiratory, metabolic and immunology.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Animal Science Procedure Act, the role of Named People, and the EU Dir 2010/63.
  • Strong understanding of drug discovery processes and pipelines.
  • Demonstrable experience in compliance document management.
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis, CAPAs, incident management.
  • Line management experience, or demonstrable equivalent matrix leadership experience.
  • Experience with AAALAC accreditation.
  • Experience working with cross-functional project teams.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrable influencing, persuasion, negotiation, and collaborator management skills.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of animal science.

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Diplomate for the European/American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or the European/American College of Animal Welfare Science, Ethics and Law or the European/American College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia.
  • PhD in a field relevant to in vivo work.
  • Project Licence Holder experience.
  • Experienced with audit of in vivo facilities, AAALAC Ad Hoc.
  • Experienced trainer / assessor under ASPA.
