This vacancy has arisen due to the secondment of the current role-holder.

This is a role requiring an individual with commitment, drive and ambition. Reporting to the Head of Finance, this is a hands-on analytical Finance role ensuring strong financial governance of the airport’s capital expenditure programme, identifying key financial trends, driving productivity improvements, and helping to shape the future direction of the business through sound and insightful financial analysis.

The successful candidate will primarily support the Technical Assets Director and the members of the Technical Assets Leadership team, and it is therefore essential the candidate can build relationships with and influence key stakeholders at senior levels of an organisation.

The remit of the Technical Asset Director includes the Airport’s capital expenditure programme and engineering and IT departments.

This role is responsible for delivery of the full suite of business partnering responsibilities – including decision support, business planning & management reporting – for the Technical Assets team. This role focusses on strategic business support enabling value for Edinburgh Airport in each of these areas and is supported by management accountant resource that assists with month end processes and data analysis.
What you'll be doing
Decision support
  • Providing insightful analysis, interpretation and explanation of trends and variances across the business
  • Monitoring individual capital project spend against approved limits and working with project managers to ensure spend is well controlled
  • Reporting on overall capital project spend against approved limits to the airport’s Capital Approvals Committee
  • Representing Finance at the regular Capital Assurance Group forums
  • Generating investment appraisals on capital projects measuring key financial metrics such as IRR, payback and NPV
  • Producing post investment reviews of critical capital projects working with senior management to investigate the effectiveness of the capital programme
  • Partnering the Technical Asset team to identify, evaluate and deliver cost productivity initiatives
  • Providing financial support and guidance on key business decisions. Supporting the stakeholders to understand the concept of “best cost”
Business Planning

Full ownership and accountability for the Technical Assets annual Budget with responsibility for ensuring alignment with business objectives, stakeholder support and sufficient rigor and control
  • Challenging the business on expected levels for future costs
  • Leading the periodic re-forecast processes taking account of material changes in performance during the year.
  • Driving the future strategic direction of the business through production of 5-year financial plans

Management reporting

  • Full ownership of the Technical Assets month end process including variance analysis, reporting of financial performance to key stakeholders and oversight of the management accountant resource to deliver this process
  • Liaising with stakeholders to agree appropriate actions based on variance analysis and holding to account to ensure delivery
  • Providing insightful commentary on financial performance for the Executive team and the Board
  • Responsible for the continuous improvement of monthly reporting to ensure it meets requirements of key stakeholders
  • Delivery of monthly rolling forecasts offering forward looking insights on financial performance

Qualifications

  • Professional Qualified Accountant (e.g. CA, ACCA, CIMA) with a preference for a minimum of 3 years post-qualified experience
  • Degree qualified with a strong academic track record

Experience

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills combined with business acumen
  • Proven commercial experience influencing senior stakeholders and their decision making
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels and across a range of finance expertise
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Office and a good working knowledge of accounting systems in a large organisation

Knowledge

  • Detailed understanding of best practice approaches to developing management information and business partnering
  • Ability to analyse diverse financial and operational data and produce concise analysis and recommendations

Personal competence and skills

  • Ability to take responsibility for decision making and possess sufficient gravitas to challenge current thinking and drive positive change
  • Experience in management reporting, planning, and budgeting skills
  • Excellent capability to interpret financial information to guide critical decision making and a well-developed commercial awareness
  • Strong analytical skills and numeracy, working to high levels of accuracy
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
