Risk Engine POD Lead - MSS IT- Equity Derivatives

Big Bank Funding. FinTech Thinking.

Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

We work in small, agile DevOps teams with colleagues around the world from our offices at the Bluefin Building in Southwark, our global headquarters in Canary Wharf, and multiple other locations around the UK including Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley and Birmingham.

Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains and with plans for continued expansion throughout 2021 and beyond, we are currently seeking a Risk Engine POD Lead to join HSBC Technology within Equities IT (MSS-IT).

Business area overview

Operating across Paris, London, New York, Hong Kong, Krakow, and Guangzhou, the Risk and PnL stream in Equity Derivatives IT is responsible for:

  • Compute grids. Large-scale computation across 1000s of cores for intraday, EOD, and regulatory risk and pnl production
  • Risk Reporting databases and view servers
  • Distributed data services for position, product, market data and reference data information to provide the correct inputs for the risk systems. Bi-temporal database storage and query.
  • Large-scale adoption of cloud computing for our systems

We provide solutions to customers in all areas of the bank, including Front Office trading and sales, Market Risk, Finance, Product Control, Collateral and Margin groups.

What you will be doing;

The role is a senior position within the Risk and PnL workstream of Equities IT, owning and running the new ‘Risk Engine’ component. As global pod lead, you will lead a global team to develop Risk Engine to become the central component in our renewed risk platform, enabling a new level of capability for risk and pnl generation in a cloud-native environment. Although the role is development-focussed, teams are expected to fully support their own applications, including deployment, testing, release management, and user support, all the way through production.

Risk Engine will be a coordination and processing hub using event-based infrastructures to rework many of our core flows, moving us away from coarse-grained batches and towards a real-time-by-default environment. Leveraging established best-of-breed open-source data frameworks such as (but not limited to) Apache Kafka, and built to take advantage of cloud infrastructure for flexibility, Risk Engine covers such use-cases such as

  • Stage and aggregate billions of regulatory risk result objects each day to send to our Front-to-Back data stores.
  • At scale, produce timely and flexible risk results to clients in Front Office and other business groups
  • As a customer, drive the evolution of our compute grids to handle use-cases including regulatory risk, VaR, risk-based and roll-based PnL, FRTB IMA calculations, on-demand risk runs, and real-time compute

We care about investing in our colleagues training and development and provide opportunities to learn and be challenged. Work life balance is also important and colleagues can choose to work from home one day or potentially more per week if that is what works best for them. We are a diverse and international team, and know that it helps contribute to high team performance.
