Job Description:

This is a senior level role within the Transport Unit Executive team, responsible for leading and managing a division of circa 650 people (450 permanent / 200 agency & contractor) in multiple locations across the UK and Spain. You will work in collaboration with the Unit General Manager, to lead and direct the Division to drive and deliver profitable sustainable growth, alongside managing the day-to-day operational business.

The Divisional General Manager (DGM) will be expected to deliver and embed all relevant Sector and Unit strategies within their Division, working closely with the relevant Sector Leaders, and establish an acute, in depth awareness of the local market environment and demonstrate sound business, financial and growth centred management.

Key responsibilities / job profile

Develop and promote leading edge technical capability throughout the Metros and Civils market

Develop, nurture, lead and support Mott MacDonald's operations within the Division by working with key stakeholders to develop strategic business plans and budgets. Provide strategic guidance and direction to ensure the Division's mission and objectives contribute to the overall strategies

Using an in-depth understanding of local market drivers and the competitive landscape to prepare and deliver Divisional strategic plans and feed into both Unit and Sector Plans, monitoring progress against these to ensure the Division achieves its objectives and optimises financial performance and operational productivity

Be accountable for overall delivery of budgetary targets, striving for continual improvement across the Division in project performance through the utilisation of sound financial management principles and a continual review of appropriate management information

Perform operational reviews within the Division and support with the design of improvements to optimise performance and productivity. Use these reviews to provide comprehensive reports to the Unit General Manager on a regular basis

Ensure sufficient resourcing across the Division to meet the business requirements, engaging with Resource Managers and key stakeholders where appropriate

Establish and nurture an innovative, challenging, collaborative and high performing work environment, which supports and fosters the Mott MacDonald values and culture

Maintain and grow a diverse and collaborative divisional executive to deliver to our clients across the UK and in selective international locations

Continually improve employee engagement, retention, wellbeing and career development opportunities for all in the Division, by utilising appropriate people management processes and principles, thereby contributing towards making Mott MacDonald the employer of choice

Proactively engage with the Division and demonstrate visible and inspiring leadership. Support the Divisional Senior Leadership team through the provision of strategic advice, guidance, coaching and direction

Manage and lead the Division in compliance with established company policies and Business Management Systems, as well as ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations, to ensure the business is operating legally and to the requirements and directives of the Group

Drive value through support functions ensuring appropriate use demonstrating collaboration, effectiveness and efficiency

Undertake operational work where this is of strategic value to the business

Candidate Specification:

  • Proven experience in delivering operations, P&L and customer relationships
  • Ability to lead and support a complex business with ambitious growth plans
  • Ability to define, agree and drive business development strategy
  • Appreciation of the Metros and Civils market in the UK and in selected overseas markets
  • Understanding of the Metros and Civils context: skills, resources and "client drivers"
  • Ability to connect our Metros and Civils agenda to our purpose, developing and drawing on leading edge capability in, among others: digital innovation; climate resilience and social outcomes
  • Excellent people management skills, team oriented with the ability to work closely with peers; ability to delegate, motivate and empower individuals and teams
  • An inspirational leader with a positive and nurturing approach when delivering challenges and change
  • Sound commercial acumen
  • Ability to exercise sound technical and commercial judgement and decision making in complex situation
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, trust and strong business ethics
  • Able to recruit successfully and manage a business through growth and periods of reduced workload
  • Registered or accredited professional and membership of a relevant professional institution
