The opportunity

Research Projects staff at CSIRO collaborate on scientific and technological activities by assisting with planning, conducting experiments, and supporting practical aspects of research.

The Australian National Herbarium (ANH) is a nationally focused collection of over one million plant specimens, forming part of CSIRO’s National Research Collections alongside the Australian National Algal Culture Collection, Australian National Insect Collection, Australian Tree Seed Centre, and Australian Wildlife Collection. This role offers a unique opportunity to work across both collections, focusing on eucalypt taxonomy to support fundamental and applied research. The successful candidate will apply botanical expertise to curate the ANH eucalypt collection, develop taxonomy skills, and contribute to electronic identification key development.

Your duties will include:

  • Curate ANH herbarium specimens, applying taxonomic revisions, maintaining collections, and ensuring proper documentation.

  • Manage and update taxonomic, herbarium specimen, and collections management databases.

  • Contribute to electronic identification tools, including data collection, taxonomy updates, image selection, and user testing.

  • Identify eucalypts and related taxa in the field and participate in collections-related fieldwork as needed.

  • Respond to client requests professionally, ensuring clear communication and monitoring satisfaction.

  • Provide guidance to less experienced staff, overseeing tasks and ensuring adherence to protocols.
