Are you passionate about helping people navigate their rights and obligations while developing your expertise in dispute resolution?

Then the newly created Assessment Officer role at Consumer Protection is for you!

Here at the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) we value diversity and appreciate every individual’s perspective, bringing together a diverse and inclusive workforce to drive innovation and success. If you’re innovative and forward-thinking, and value collaboration and want to contribute to fair outcomes for tenants and consumers, then DEMIRS is the agency for you.

The role

Consumer Protection is growing its newly established Commissioner Determinations team to implement key aspects of recent legislative reforms designed to enable tenants to make their rental a home and to provide an accessible and streamlined alternative to court for bond disputes.

As the Assessment Officer, you will join our Geraldton team and work under supervision to manage determination applications about bond releases, keeping pets, or making minor modifications in residential tenancies.

You will provide initial assessments on applications and seek advice on how relevant legislation might apply to the circumstances. You will deal with routine matters relating to rights and obligations of parties and provide informed and impartial advice while ensuring accurate maintenance of the records and database system. Additionally, you will communicate with both parties about applications using a range of mediums and provide administrative and operational support to the branch.

We are currently looking for candidates with the ability to understand and apply relevant legislation and policies to straightforward matters. A customer focussed approach, strong listening skills, and the ability to develop basic solutions to resolve simple matters are essential. Furthermore, your organisational skills to manage competing priorities will be key to your success for this role.

Please refer to the Job Description Form (JDF) attached for further information regarding the position, including any specific requirements, capabilities and pre-employment checks which will be assessed as part of the selection process.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 24 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments) at the time of application.

This position is in Geraldton, a coastal city in the Mid West region of Western Australia. With a thriving population, Geraldton boasts a prosperous economy and a near-perfect lifestyle year-round. It is known as a place of choice to work, visit, raise families and take in some of the unique natural attractions Western Australia has to offer.
