About the role

Sustainable, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable & Reusable) data is the lifeblood of AstraZeneca as a science-led, pure-play pharmaceutical company and critical for the delivery of the AstraZeneca corporate strategy, in which Data, AI and Digital is a foundational value driver for Innovative Science and a potential corporate differentiator.  

AstraZeneca’s R&D Data Office is an industry-leading enabler of data and AI strategy. We provide data services, technology, and data products, supported by data and AI policy and governance, to unlock the value of data that drive innovative science.

In R&D, Data Science and AI, we operate a Hub and Spoke model, with Data Office as part of the hub, hosting, managing and provisioning a set of analytics ready data that is FAIR across a range of data types, initially including omics data, imaging data, clinical patient data, biological and small molecule screening data. The team provides data science environments with appropriate tooling and access to data for data scientists to use to perform analysis.  

We manage a large portfolio of investments and resource in Data Science and AI, R&D IT and Enterprise Data and AI to deliver analytics ready data for Machine Learning and AI for R&D as well as enabling a more automated Intent to Insight journey. Delivering critical initiatives across our portfolio of services and products requires strong coherence in design and strategy across services, processes, products and technology.

The Director, Solution Delivery and Transformation will work with DS&AI Product Managers, Process Owners and Service Leads, as well as IT leaders to lead and deliver critical initiatives and ensure that the programme of work is properly managed to delivery against agreed priorities, including preparing for PI planning and coordinating the development of initiatives and Business Epics as required.

This role will employ a strong blend of data product and technology knowledge as well as, architecture and analysis capabilities across a varied customer group. We are looking for experienced programme managers who can combine in depth knowledge of project delivery with the ability to collaborate with colleagues within our team. You will be curious, dedicated and unafraid of challenging the status quo. You will relish the opportunity to bring sophisticated and innovative projects to the fore, and have the courage and conviction to deliver end to end.

Accountabilities

  • Define, develop and deliver plans for complex data challenges projects / programmes end-to-end, including workstream packages, activities and dependencies, resources, cost, role and responsibilities, goals and benefits

  • Run projects / programmes’ budgets, forecast, tasks, schedules, risks, reporting, governance, and other relevant governance responsibilities

  • Build a cohesive delivery project team to improve project’s overall success through collaboration within the team, with customers and other partners, e.g. IT

  • Develop and assure service transition plans to ensure delivered solutions are sustainable within a BAU environment

  • Support the maintenance of the overall architecture design and roadmap, spanning services, technology products, data products and high-level capabilities for the team

  • Drive the continuous development of overall functional strategy with a “drug pipeline impact” and “benefit” approach, championing and encouraging sharing methodologies across our teams identifying any process and technology gaps, as well as targeted strategic programmes.

  • Support the roll out and adoption of the Data Office’s overall services and new sophisticated solutions within the Therapeutic Areas.

  • Act as strategic advisor for Product Management across the Data Office to ensure alignment across products and technology for the Data Office.

  • Provide thought leadership and advanced technical expertise for Data Office solutions

Essential Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree level in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience in a related business domain or subject area

  • Extensive experience in a data sciences and technology  

  • Extensive experience crafting and supporting the end-to-end processes and activities in the build and the delivery of data solutions

  • Demonstrable understanding of structures, provenance and applications in data science and AI for one or more complex data domains

  • Leading data strategy and thinking in a large organisation

  • Awareness of the latest data and technology trends

  • Able to influence and deliver strategic vision, direction, and planning

  • Hold a blend of product, technology, analysis and architecture skills

  • Experience working in global, diverse teams to agile principles

  • Experience in process design, IT product development and development

  • Knowledge of key policies and standards for data covering areas such as privacy and security

  • Track record of significant strategic data project delivery with demonstration of clear scientific and/or operational value
