Environmental Study Manager

Are you passionate about environmental sustainability and eager to contribute to the environmental safety of life-changing medicines? We are seeking an Environmental Study Manager to join our Global SHE and Operations Sustainability function. This role is integral in supporting the development and delivery of Environmental Risk Assessments (ERAs) and associated generation of environmental toxicity and fate data. Your work will ensure regulatory compliance and contribute to our Product Sustainability strategy, ultimately helping us deliver our medicines to patients while effectively managing our environmental impact.


As an Environmental Study Manager, you will lead the outsourcing activities of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) environmental toxicity and fate studies at contract research organisations (CROs). You will assist with prioritising data generation across our diverse portfolio, working with cross-functional teams to understand project timelines, prepare science-based testing strategies, and prioritise budget and resource allocation. Your responsibilities will also include acting as a point of contact between CROs and AstraZeneca, managing quotations, invoices, and budgets, reviewing and finalising study protocols and reports, ensuring regulatory deadlines are met, and managing test material transfer to CROs. You will also provide strategic management of capability and capacity across AstraZeneca’s portfolio of contract research organisations and support AZ SHE functions as required.

Essential Skills/Experience:
- Science degree or equivalent with strong interest in environmental sustainability and or environmental risk assessments
- Experience in environmental fate testing/ or chemistry/ or experimental ecotoxicology/ or regulatory environmental risk assessment
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Experience in managing budgets, small projects and/or deliverables to tight timelines
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
- Effective English writing and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines

Desirable Skills/Experience:
- Experience in, or a good understanding of, the principles of GLP
- Experience in managing multiple stakeholders to deliver project goals
- Good analytical skills and ability to interpret data
- Experience or understanding of the science and regulations around pharmaceuticals (or other chemicals) in the environment
- Certification in environmental risk assessment such a SETAC Certified Risk Assessor (CRA) or International Board of Environmental Risk Assessor (IBERA) diplomate
