Engineering Safety & Sustainability Manager

Purpose of the Role:
Reporting to the Professional Head of Safety, this role will provide advice, guidance, planned and reactive support to the Engineering community. You will champion effective and proportionate management of safety, act as an expert adviser and critical friend to both the engineering function and the wider safety & sustainability team. In addition, supporting ongoing continuous improvement of Freightliner’s Vehicle Maintenance Facilities.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Accountable for driving safety improvement initiatives within the Freightliner engineering function.
- Support development and delivery of the safety and sustainability strategy within Freightliner.
- Engage in project activity and coordinate local safety improvement implementation.
- Support effective engagement on safety and sustainability topics and promote just culture to drive effective learning and continual improvement.
- Provide advice and support to ensure effective management, investigation and remediation of accidents, injuries and precursor incidents.
- Create and maintain audit plan and activity.
- Develop monthly safety packs including KPIs to illustrate key trends informing both strategy and planning within the Engineering function.
Key job requirements:
- Level 6 or 7 qualification in a relevant subject
- Membership of a relevant professional body ideally chartered and or working towards
- Experience within safety and sustainability within rail engineering, transport or similar safety critical sector
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Excellent data management skills, and experience of coordinating management information to support continual improvement
- Able to challenge and influence senior leadership to promote safety & sustainability
- The ability to produce clear and concise written documentation and to present technical detail
- Exposure of project and programme management
- Good influencing skills and the ability to engage others in shared objective/s
- Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative to engage internal and external stakeholders
- Willingness and ability to work flexibly and travel throughout the UK
- Be competent in the use of Microsoft 365 suite and relevant specialist software
