We have an exciting opportunity within our Commercial Team at our Stratford HQ for an Analytics Engineer.
The Role
As an Analytics Engineer at Greater Anglia (GA), your role encompasses the entire data lifecycle—beginning with data ingestion and processing, and advancing through transformation, analysis, and reporting across GA's diverse data landscape.
This role plays a vital part in our organisation, requiring you to work closely with Analysts and decision-makers from various departments, including Customer Experience, Train Service Delivery, and Fleet Engineering. You will provide them with customised support that ranges from managing data pipelines to creating Power BI visualisations tailored to specific projects, leveraging the full suite of capabilities in our Microsoft Fabric data platform.
The broad remit of this role encompasses that of the traditional Data Analyst and Data Engineer , reflecting the rapidly evolving nature of our data landscape and our organisational need for a versatile approach that meets the different levels of data maturity across our various departments. This role will be placed at the cutting edge of data-driven railway innovation, translating big data into actionable insights which will enhance numerous operational areas within GA.
Key Responsibilities:
Proactively engage with GA’s various business units and stakeholders to understand their data needs and aspirations.
Develop reporting automation (e.g., Power BI reports), analytical approaches, and data flows in collaboration with GA’s various business units to help achieve their objectives.
Manage and maintain data ingestion, storage, and transformation pipelines within GA’s Microsoft Fabric data platform.
Work with relevant stakeholders (e.g., departmental Data Owners and Data Stewards) to uphold data quality and accessibility.
Implement data governance best practices and contribute to policy documentation to ensure organisational compliance.
Ensure that all such data processes are thoroughly documented for clarity and discoverability, maintaining a comprehensive technical knowledge base regarding the data on the platform.
Provide relevant support on operational transformation initiatives (e.g., timetabling and fleet servicing) where data analysis or data sharing pipelines are required.
Serve as the technical lead on the exploration of AI/ML technologies for new use cases such as predictive maintenance.
What we are looking for
We’re looking for someone who possess a passion for problem-solving and analytical thinking. The ideal candidate should have up to 1-2 years of professional experience or equivalent. A degree in STEM or a quantitative field would be helpful, though candidates from diverse educational backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Candidates should be able to utilise numerical data creatively to tackle complex issues, and having an intuition for visualising data effectively. Adaptability to rapidly changing technologies and project environments is needed, along with a willingness to learn .
The candidate should have experience with data visualisation tools like Power BI or Tableau, and familiarity with data engineering engines such as Spark or Kafka would be advantageous. We recognise that a broad range of candidates from related technical or quantitative fields may possess transferable skills, and we encourage applications from all backgrounds.
The ideal candidate will work independently, adeptly translating objectives into actionable plans, while proactively engaging with various business departments to address their data needs. Interpersonal and stakeholder management skills are essential, particularly for effective project management and collaborative interactions across multiple GA departments.
