What does the Subsea Electricity Cable Team do?

Sixty Scottish islands and the Isle of Wight are currently connected to the electricity network that serves mainland Great Britain by SSEN Distribution's submarine electricity cables. The Subsea Electricity Cable team is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the efficiency and integrity of this network which comprises in excess of 120 subsea cables totalling over 450km.

We are currently undertaking a significant programme of investment spanning 2023 to 2028 covering cable inspection, maintenance and replacement. This will ensure a safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity to homes and businesses.

What is the Role? 

- As a Subsea Onshore Consents and Environmental Manager you will be responsible for ensuring that all environmental, consenting and technical risks are understood, minimised, documented and incorporated into the terrestrial consents required to inspect, maintain and install subsea and also freshwater cables.

- You'll have responsibility for preparing environmental assessments and subsequently submit and monitor applications in order to secure the necessary statutory consents including statutory notifications relating to permitted development rights. This will include negotiating and where justified, challenging conditions with statutory authorities and submitting robust supporting information. You will prepare and maintain Environmental Management Plans covering the projects from inception through to delivery and commissioning.

- With the support of the Lead Marine Consents manager and the wider team you will develop and build external stakeholder relationships with consenting bodies, statutory authorities, landowners/ tenants and wider key stakeholders.

- In addition to the above you may be required to support the Land Consents Manager in negotiating landowner agreements including wayleaves, leases and access permissions.

What do I need? 

- You'll be an expert on terrestrial planning and land consents relating to the development of infrastructure projects which have terrestrial and marine components, ideally relating to cable route development or analogous projects, and will have a strong working knowledge of environmental and licensing law relevant to both the terrestrial and marine work scopes required to deliver these.

- Ability to demonstrate expertise in securing consents for infrastructure projects particularly regarding project design envelope definition, environmental appraisal, management of sub-contractors, identification of the required consents and licence condition close-out.

- Relevant experience of working with stakeholders to minimise conflict and promote co-existence without compromising the key objectives required for project delivery (Experience of working with key stakeholders, such as landowners, tenants, agents, local authorities, national agencies to secure land consents, leases and access agreements would be desirable)

- You will have membership of IEMA, CIEEM or RICS (or be willing to work towards obtaining membership)

- You should bring a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in a relevant industry (e.g., oil industry, aquaculture, utility), Experience of utilising GIS systems for basic data manipulation and development of plans would be desirable.

**As travel will be required in this role, it is essential you have a valid UK drivers license. You may also be required to represent SSEN during offshore cable route survey operations and would be required to go through the appropriate level of offshore survival training**
