About us

The Technical Services Team are responsible for design and delivery of SCADA, Protection and Control Systems that enables SSE Network Management Centres (NMC) to manage its extensive Electricity Distribution Network. To ensure the continued success of the department, we are looking to recruit a Real Time Systems Design and Delivery Engineer.

About the Role

Real Time Systems Design and delivery (RTSD) Engineer, reporting to the lead RTSD Engineer, will play a pivotal role in interpreting business and customer requirements to turn them into technical solutions and manage deliverables.

Some of the key responsibilities of the role are as follows:

  • Undertake full solution design of SCADA field systems, telecommunication and other auxiliary systems for primary and secondary electrical distribution assets.
  • Acting as designated contact for internal and external stakeholders for design reviews and subject matter consultations to ensure standards, business compliance and technical requirements are adhered.
  • Support procurement, delivery, commissioning and maintenance activities.
  • Provide training and mentorship for team members and contracting partners on technology, project execution, work processes and procedures.
  • Supporting the process of transformation from concept throughout to the business-as-usual adoption of technologies and systems as part of the journey towards reaching overall business goals.

Managing multiple concurrent tasks of various dimensions will be an integral part of this role and therefore creativity, problem solving, work prioritising and time management are essential aspects of this role.

This position will offer many opportunities for skills development and to participate in specialised training programmes.

Your Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role, you will hold a degree (or be suitably qualified with strong experience) in Computing, Science, Electronics or Engineering. Due to the technical nature of the role, previous experience in a similar context is preferred.

  • You'll have working experience in Substation Control Systems, Distribution Grid Automation, Tele- protection systems, RTUs, PLCs, IEDs, Operational Technology Networks and will demonstrate competency in most common Serial/TCP based electrical utility SCADA protocols and standards. Familiarity with various telecoms services and telemetry systems will be a definite advantage.
  • Further to the technical requirements, you will be safety focussed with excellent written and verbal communication skills; you should be comfortable dealing with stakeholders at all levels, both internal and external.
  • You will have the ability to adapt with changing business requirements and priorities, be self-disciplined with excellent organisational skills, capable of working on your own initiative and to deadlines within a proactive and supportive environment.

The role will be office based; however, there will be the need for regular travel to substations, sites, supplier locations and other SSE offices as required so a full UK driving license is essential.
