From cutting-edge radar systems to next-generation defence technologies, Australia’s defence sector is booming—and with it comes a wave of opportunity for professionals from all walks of life ready to make an impact.

Whether you come from a technical, commercial, or other background, this evolving industry offers a dynamic environment where people with diverse skill sets can thrive.

Companies like BAE Systems Australia are at the centre of it all, where innovation, purpose, and professional development coexist.

For Bianca, a Project Manager supporting the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) sustainment program, joining the company marked a meaningful turning point in her career.

“I was drawn to BAE Systems Australia by the diversity of programs and projects across the organisation. It felt like the perfect place to keep learning and growing professionally. I was also excited by the opportunity to be part of Australia’s Defence industry boom, a sector that’s rapidly evolving and full of purpose.

“Joining BAE Systems meant stepping into a dynamic environment where I could apply my skills while continuing to challenge myself with new experiences.”

We spoke with Bianca about what it’s like to build a successful career in defence.

1. Build your experience and use transferable skills

Bianca holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering, which laid the groundwork for her career in project engineering and operational delivery within the oil and gas industry. After moving to Australia in 2013, she successfully transitioned into the manufacturing sector, applying her technical knowledge and transferable skills across new challenges.

“I embraced the challenge of adapting to a new culture, language, and professional environment, while pivoting into a new sector. While in manufacturing, I completed my Diploma in Project Management, which gave me structure to match my practical experience and led to my first formal Project Manager role.”

This prepared her to lead cross-functional teams and complex projects – skills that now serve her well in the defence industry.

“I always had the ambition to join defence. I was drawn to the complexity, purpose, and innovation characterising the field. While I wasn’t able to secure a role right away, looking back, I believe continuing to prepare myself was key to eventually opening the door.”

It wasn’t luck, but persistence, growth, and support from people who believed in her that helped her land the opportunity she had been working towards.

“I joined BAE Systems through the Project Manager pool, which was a fantastic opportunity for someone like me, without a military background or a conventional path into defence. The program allowed me to rotate across different projects and programs, giving me time to understand the business, build relationships, and explore where I could best contribute.”

2. Grow your network within a supportive, inspiring culture

From recruitment through to onboarding, Bianca felt welcomed and encouraged at BAE Systems.

“Throughout the process, I felt understood and supported, which made a big difference during what can often be a stressful time. That positive start gave me confidence and confirmed I was joining the right team and organisation.”

As a newcomer to such a large organisation, she initially felt a bit lost. But she quickly found her footing, surrounded by supportive colleagues who offered guidance.

“Thanks to their encouragement and the structure of the pool program, I was able to transition smoothly into the permanent role I hold today. It’s a great example of how BAE Systems creates pathways for professionals from diverse backgrounds to grow and thrive.”

She was happy to discover that genuine support networks, including formal mentoring programs and employee resource groups, were available within the company.

“I didn’t expect such a strong culture of collaboration and empowerment, and it’s inspired me to keep pushing my boundaries while connecting with and supporting others along the way.”

Bianca acknowledges that many still believe defence is a space where women or those from diverse backgrounds may struggle to fit into the culture, or face barriers to succeed.

“While challenges exist, many organisations, like BAE Systems, are actively fostering inclusive environments and support networks to help everyone thrive. This is essential in opening doors for more diverse talent, and creating a stronger, more dynamic industry.”

As she shares, the company’s partnership with organisations like WORK180 reinforces this commitment.

“It makes me feel proud to be part of a company that’s actively breaking down barriers and creating real opportunities for diverse talent.”

3. Continue to grow through learning and development

Ongoing opportunities for learning and professional development, as well as a supportive network of colleagues and mentors, have encouraged Bianca to push through challenges and continuously improve.

“I’m currently studying a Certificate IV in Responding to Project Complexity, which BAE Systems kindly sponsored. This opportunity to further develop my skills shows the company’s real investment in my professional growth and motivates me to keep pushing forward.”

Knowing her contributions are valued and that there is a real effort to create a more inclusive environment makes her excited about her future with the business.

4. Find a role with purpose

For Bianca, what sets her role in defence apart from others is the unique combination of purpose, innovation, and collaboration.

“I’m inspired to be part of projects that directly contribute to national security and technological advancement. The complexity and scale of projects, coupled with the chance to continuously learn and grow, make this role both challenging and deeply rewarding.”

One of her favourite parts of her role is the fast-paced nature of project delivery, which keeps her engaged and constantly learning.

5. Be part of an organisation that embraces diversity

At BAE Systems Bianca has found a culture where diverse perspectives are valued and encouraged.

“The company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, especially through initiatives like the Embrace ERG (employee resource group), has created a sense of belonging and empowerment for me.”

Joining Embrace enabled her to connect with colleagues from different backgrounds who share a vision for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through events and open discussions, she felt seen, heard, and valued in a way she hadn’t experienced before.

“That sense of belonging gave me confidence and motivation to grow personally and professionally. It was then I realised BAE is a place I can truly thrive and contribute.”

Another important shift she experienced was flexibility – something that wasn’t accessible in her earlier operational roles.

“I truly value the flexibility here, especially RDOs (rostered day offs). It gives me time to enjoy life outside of work, including connecting with my culture, spending quality time with my family and developing my passion for Venezuelan dance. Having the ability to balance my professional responsibilities with my personal life has greatly improved my wellbeing, growth and productivity.”

Advice for others considering a career in defence

If you think the defence industry is only for people with traditional, technical backgrounds or military experience, think again.

“This misconception is limiting. In reality, people with diverse career paths (including those with experience from industries like manufacturing, or oil and gas, and skills like project management) can contribute meaningfully and bring fresh perspectives that drive innovation.

“Additionally, soft skills matter more than you might think in enhancing innovation and leadership, such as cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, and collaboration.”

There are many skills that are highly valuable in the defence industry – even if they come from seemingly unrelated fields. Think:

  • Project management
  • Coordinating teams
  • Effective communication
  • Adaptability
  • Meeting strict deadlines
  • Problem-solving.

Her advice to others? Don’t self-select out:

“If you’re curious, driven, and open to learning, you may just find an ideal career path in defence.”
