Scotland's Railway covers a large geographical area from the Borders to Thurso at the far tip of the North East of Scotland, accounting for almost 20 per cent of the UK rail network. We provide rapid access along busy commuter routes to our seven cities, servicing the varied needs of our business and leisure commuter services, including cross border services and rural services. We have up to 50 freight services operating every day and we are steadily building capacity for this to grow.

Brief Description

Your decisions make all the difference. Taking the lead on signalling during your shift, you'll take great care to make sure trains travel safely and efficiently along the network. You'll keep Britain moving.

Salary: £29,221 (£26,485 whilst in training)

About the role (External)

As a guardian of safety and good communications on the railway, you'll ensure the safe passage of trains. You will undertake our Signaller Apprenticeship Programme for a minimum of 12 months to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to undertake the duties of one of the most important jobs on Britain's Railway.

Maintaining the highest standards in every action you take, you'll make sure each decision is thought through, following clear, calm and methodical analysis. Even under pressure, your standards will never slip.

You will work on a shift basis. As the focal point of railway operations in your assigned area, you'll be expected to take the lead in your duties during your shift. That means you'll take command of situations, with an assertive approach and clear communication.

Mandatory Signalling Apprenticeship and Training

Our Signaller Apprenticeship provides those who are new to the signaller world full training to develop both technical skills and non-technical skills and acquire practical experience through a wide mix of learning. You will benefit from attending a 12 week residential signaller training course followed by a period of supervised on the job training and the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment.

To ensure you're on the right track and you are receiving the support you need, you will have regular reviews with your line manager and Trainer.

On successful completion of your Signalling Apprenticeship you will have acquired a Level 2 Infrastructure Operations Apprenticeship.

The role of Signaller requires flexibility as you will be required to work on a rotational shift basis to ensure maximum coverage of our railway. As the focal point of railway operations in your assigned area, you'll be expected to take the lead in your duties during your shift. That means you'll take command of situations, with an assertive approach and clear communication.

This role involves days, nights and weekend working and the job is safety critical. Offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and passing of the relevant medical assessment and BPSS pre-employment checks.
