How is inclusion shaping where and how women work?

Women at work

From flexible work arrangements to leadership opportunities and family-friendly policies, inclusion is no longer a ‘nice to have’—it’s a must.

Across traditionally male-dominated industries and emerging sectors alike, inclusive practices are transforming the workplace for women. Flexibility, whether through remote work, adaptable hours, or outcome-focused environments, is playing a pivotal role in this shift, opening doors across industries and enabling women to thrive on their terms.

But what does this actually look like on the ground?

We asked women from our WORK180 Endorsed Employers to share their experiences. From supportive cultures to career-accelerating programs, they reveal how inclusive workplaces are helping them thrive and why inclusion remains the key to building truly equitable careers.

    Flexibility, fieldwork, and career fulfilment

After having her second child, Shellie Mbiza, Communications & Control Engineering Officer at Powerlink, found herself in a role that didn’t just promise flexibility: it delivered.

“After having my second child, I’ve been so fortunate to have a role that truly supports flexibility. I felt genuinely supported—from time off for appointments, access to health leave options, adjusted duties and a smooth maternity leave. My manager made sure I felt safe, capable, and confident throughout.”

Now working part-time—Tuesday to Thursday—she’s been able to maintain a fulfilling balance between work and family life without feeling disconnected from her career.

“I still feel just as engaged. I’m able to contribute meaningfully to our projects, and that means a lot to me both professionally and personally.”

For Dina Dweik, Associate Director at TBH and Nisa Hamad, People & Culture Manager and a part-time working parent, leadership and flexibility can absolutely go hand in hand:

“My journey from Senior Consultant to Associate Director has been shaped not just by career growth, but also by the flexibility offered to me throughout my career. I am based in our Dubai office, but I’ve been able to work remotely from my home country, Jordan, at different times, which has helped me stay connected to my family while continuing to deliver on my projects.”

“I am in a leadership position at TBH, which is also part-time, providing me with flexibility as a mum and primary carer for my young family while still supporting my career aspirations. A hybrid working arrangement allows me to connect with colleagues and stakeholders in person when I’m at the office, and to be close to my family when working from home. It’s really important for me to be close to my family should something come up while I’m working. I’m fortunate to have a team and manager who make staying digitally connected and informed easy, so when life happens, we support each other to recalibrate on priorities and continue to do great work.”

Flexibility and purpose in FIFO and beyond

For Environmental Advisor Emma Garison, flexibility isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a fundamental part of her work with IGO at the Nova Nickel Operation. With a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) schedule, Emma has found a rhythm that supports both her professional growth and personal well-being.

“A fly-in-fly-out role with IGO encourages excellent balance between my work and personal life. When on site, the workdays can be long, though having great camp facilities means I can still wind down, exercise, and socialise at the end of the day. When at home on break, I can completely switch off from work and enjoy time with my friends and family. Additionally, Nova Mine has several flights a week, so there is plenty of flexibility if I need to make a change to my travel days.”

Looking for career satisfaction? IGO are championing women in a diverse range of roles, including FIFO!

Flexibility may seem like a simple concept, but for women in engineering, especially those balancing caregiving responsibilities, it can be the difference between staying in a role or stepping away from it. Emmanuelle Wintergerst, Engineering Capability Development Manager at NetApp, shares how this has been a game-changer in her career.

“I am lucky to work for a company that puts great value on flexibility. My role is not bound by fixed hours; there are no shifts or specific times I am required to be there. As a result, while I do like a routine, having this flexibility has removed a lot of the stress linked to the vagaries of life. The other way around, if I need to attend a meeting outside of office hours, due to a difference in time zones, I know that I will be able to adjust my office hours at a different time. Working in a big international company presents challenges, but embracing the flexibility has been key to work-life balance.”

      Where to find out more

When women are seen leading teams in high-vis gear, managing portfolios from co-working spaces, or innovating from labs and classrooms, it expands the narrative of what’s possible. It gives the next generation tangible examples of where their careers can take them and the confidence to pursue them.

That’s why diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives matter. They don’t just add women to workplaces; they help reshape them into spaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow, lead, and be recognised.
