Women at work

Whether it’s a remote mine site, a regional community, or an international conference, women are carving out dynamic careers in roles that take them far beyond the office.

Thanks to inclusive policies, supportive teams, and a growing emphasis on flexibility and safety, more women are embracing opportunities that involve travel, fieldwork, and fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) arrangements.

We spoke to women from WORK180 Endorsed Employers who are on the move (literally!) and they shared how their workplaces are empowering them to explore, grow, and succeed wherever their careers take them.

    Fieldwork makes the dream work

As part of her role, Shellie Mbiza, Communications & Control Engineering Officer at Powerlink, travels extensively across Queensland, particularly in the southeast, where she experiences firsthand the diversity of regional communities and workplaces.

“As part of my role, I travel across Queensland and enjoy visiting different towns and communities. With the energy grid currently transitioning toward more renewable technologies, I’ve had some awesome opportunities to learn and grow. Being involved in projects that integrate solar, wind farms, and battery systems into an existing network has been challenging and fascinating. The variety of connections and emerging technologies we work with keeps things dynamic and has significantly deepened my technical knowledge and engagement in my role.”

Whether she’s on the ground in a remote location or collaborating with teams across the network, the field-based nature of her role brings a sense of meaning that goes far beyond the technical work.

“The work I do in the field is especially meaningful because I can directly see the impact I have on creating a well-connected Queensland. Our ultimate goal is to build resilient infrastructure that can withstand challenges such as grid stability and emerging technologies. Knowing that my daily efforts help make this happen is incredibly rewarding.”

International projects lead to international careers

In her leadership role, Dina Dweik, Associate Director at TBH, has travelled from Dubai to Saudi Arabia and Sydney, offering valuable opportunities for both professional and personal growth:

“I’ve had the chance to travel to Saudi Arabia for work, which was a great experience. It allowed me to work closely with different clients and be part of giga projects. The opportunity has helped me grow professionally, become more adaptable, and build stronger communication and leadership skills in different settings. I recently had the opportunity to visit our Sydney office to attend business development training, which was a great chance to connect with colleagues and gain a broader perspective on how we operate across regions.”

Throughout her career, as a People & Culture Manager and a part-time working parent, Nisa Hamad has travelled across Australia, an experience that has helped her build a stronger sense of empathy and awareness in the way she supports others.

“Being able to see people in person and their various communities has provided me with meaningful personal and professional development. It’s given me an appreciation for the culturally diverse country in which we live and the diverse identities of various local communities. Professionally, it has shaped my awareness and approach on how to get the best out of a diverse team and promote people’s sense of belonging in the workplace.”

Although Dina’s work is primarily office-based, she ensures she stays grounded in the on-the-ground reality of projects, an approach that deeply enriches both her work and the people she mentors.

“I believe it’s important to stay close to the building process and TBH’s clients. That’s why, whenever possible, I spend time at site offices and go on site visits. Being on-site helps me understand the real challenges, stay connected with TBH and client teams delivering the project, and enables me to expand my practical experience. This is a big part of what makes my work meaningful. It helps me provide better advice, because I’m not just sitting behind a desk, I’m part of the process.”

The unique opportunity within FIFO careers

For Environmental Advisor Emma Garison, her FIFO career has taken her across a wide range of environments—from remote outback landscapes to bustling capital cities. These varied experiences have given her valuable insight, not just into Australia’s unique ecosystems, but into the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in the environmental sector.

“I have been fortunate to have many enriching travel opportunities in my career thus far. This has included performing environmental monitoring in remote outback locations, attending industry events in busy capital cities, and everything in between. These experiences foster growth, resilience, and independence while facilitating collaboration and networking with diverse stakeholders. All while being able to see more of Australia and experience our unique ecosystems!”

It’s this blend of fieldwork and office responsibilities that keeps Emma engaged and energised. The role offers a meaningful connection between environmental stewardship and the real-world challenges of resource management.

“I am passionate about creating balance between the resource sector and natural environment, particularly at the end of mine life during mine closure and rehabilitation. Having a role that involves both office and field work is extremely fulfilling. You can go from performing surveys and monitoring one day, to data analysis and report writing the next! The role of an environmental advisor with IGO is very diverse, and there is plenty of opportunity to grow and specialise in your interests, making it an extremely satisfying career.”

Bringing diverse skills and mindsets to global careers

Emmanuelle Wintergerst, Engineering Capability Development Manager at NetApp, shares how her global career has spanned multiple countries, languages, and cultures—each one contributing to her growth both professionally and personally. She reflects on how navigating cultural diversity not only improved her technical abilities but also deepened her emotional intelligence.

“I have worked in many different places, and four different countries and three different languages! Exposure to different cultures, languages, and ways of thinking broadens your mind beyond just learning a job. During my engineering studies and the early stages of my career, the human aspect of work was never a priority and proved to be very challenging for me. The exposure to a wide variety of people and context forced me to work on this actively and enabled me to turn what was a weakness into a forte.”

For women wondering whether this company might be the right fit, she offers a final insight into the work environment and how it supports wellbeing and balance.

“To me, working in an office means being able to establish a boundary between my work life and my personal life. While I do work from home when needed, I prefer to keep my work life separate from my personal life, maintaining a clear distinction between the two. It is a safe option too. It allows me a degree of control over my environment, and to establish a routine, both things that are important for my mental health.”

      Where to find out more

When women are seen leading teams in high-vis gear, managing portfolios from co-working spaces, or innovating from labs and classrooms, it expands the narrative of what’s possible. It gives the next generation tangible examples of where their careers can take them and the confidence to pursue them.

That’s why diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives matter. They don’t just add women to workplaces; they help reshape them into spaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow, lead, and be recognised.
